Kais Shiman, of Mystic, was one of the four teens in a 2012 Toyota 4Runner that veered off the wrong side of Fishtown Road in Groton around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, and collided with a tree near the intersection of Little Gull Lane, authorities said.
Carson Wilson, age 14, of Groton, died from his injuries. His older brother Skyler Wilson and friends Alex Quilter and Kais Shiman, all 17, were seriously injured and remain hospitalized.
Groton and surrounding communities have rallied around the families. Along with multiple vigils and memorials, more than $100,000 has been raised in GoFundMe campaigns to help cover medical expenses and everyday bills for the surviving boys' families so they can remain by their bedsides.
A GoFundMe for Kais Shiman has raised nearly $28,000 of its $40,000 goal. The fundraiser's organizer wrote in an update on Wednesday, Oct. 16, that Kais had flashes of lucidity.
We wanted to provide a quick update on Kais. Today, he is showing some signs of being more alert, but he is still very concussed and in and out of awareness. He will be undergoing the first of many surgeries today.
The campaign also said that Kais' parents, who run a business, shouldn't be left to "carry this weight alone."
"The financial burden of medical expenses and daily necessities is overwhelming, especially for those who do not have a steady paycheck," the fundraiser said. "Their commitment to their business comes with the added stress of navigating these unforeseen circumstances, and they shouldn’t have to carry this weight alone.
"We’re asking for your support to ease this financial strain. All funds raised will be given directly to Jeremy and Mandie Shiman. ... Every contribution, no matter the size, will help cover medical bills, therapy, and essential care."
